Here’s a wonderful New Year and a warm adieu to the old! We have entered into 2011 with a hope to bring us happiness, good times and good cheer. Fair enough!
One of my personal wish this year – for the Tamil people of Sri Lanka, those who have been going through a lot of pain for years. Even though there was a decisive end to a brutal 30-year war, the civilian Tamil people are still facing issues with their day to day basic needs – food, drinking water and medicine.
As per the International Crisis Group, the current situation of Sri Lankan Tamils has been reported as follows - Of the nearly 300,000 people displaced from their homes by the last two years of fighting, the large majority have left the military-run camps in which they were locked for months. Despite this positive development, the latest UN figures indicate that more than 20,000 people remain in the camps another 70,000 live with host families, unable to return to their own land. Those who have returned home face huge problems, including a lack of housing and public infrastructure, and few opportunities to earn a living, with continued difficulties for many in farming their land and fishing off the coast.
Whatsoever happened in the past is past. These poor people (including so many young children with lots of dreams), have suffered enough. It is unfair if the status-quo continues to exist. Both the Sri Lankan Government and the International Community must find a decent life for these affected people, so they can also live peacefully like any other normal people in the world.
I pray to God that 2011 to bring a little HAPPINESS and PEACE to the Sri Lankan Tamils!
