“Government by THE PEOPLE; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a FREE electoral system” – That’s the definition of democracy.
While it is yet to be debated what is happening in Egypt will yield peace to Egyptian people or instability to the surrounding region, I am glad, at least people are awaken from the exploitation of so called ‘democracy’. Provided there will be a fair and balanced election to choose their next leader, and if it will be a continued process, that’s a huge step towards a decent democracy. Whether Hosni Mubarak steps down or not, there will definitely be instability in the region and a cascading effect to other world powers. But, from Egyptian people’s perspective, they fight for their own rights for a FREE electoral system. Once that’s in place, I am sure there are ways to bring stability to the surrounding region through bi-lateral relationships.
While all this is happening in Egypt, I started to think about how much exploitation is done in world’s largest democracy “INDIA”. No doubt, we have a proven democracy since independence in terms of conducting elections every five years. But, from an exploitation stand-point, I do not see a difference between Egypt and India except that Egypt is ruled by the same leader for 30 years. May be I am bit too harsh by saying that, but that’s a hard reality based on my perception and opinion.
I can say, by all means India is more developed than Egypt. So, when it comes to “Democracy”, it is a question that we need to ask ourselves – How can we eradicate the exploitation, so we can witness a real democracy sooner than later.
